Free Pattern Friday

I have been trying to use my free time a little more productively. It’s super easy for me to spend a lot of time with my iPad, and time will get away from me. The biggest culprits for me are TikTok and YouTube. Even Pinterest to an extent. 

There aren’t too many tv shows that interest me, but there are a few shows I enjoy. Right now NBC is showing Surviving Earth and The Americas. Both are good. On Monday night (if I’m home) I watch American Ninja Warriors. I have been watching it for about ten years. 

While I’m watching tv, I have been crocheting. I found a cute pattern on Pinterest, and it is super easy. It’s called Peephole Chevron Stitch. 

The instructions say to start with a foundation chain that is a multiple of 10 plus 3. For a baby afghan I started 103 chains. This pattern is really repetitive, so I can watch tv while I am working on it. I got one finished last night.

I used the “super soft” yarn from Hobby Lobby, and it took three skeins to get a decent sized afghan. I started another one with the same yarn in green tones last night, but I only got a couple of rows done. It’s okay—it will go fast. 

Wow, the color is definitely not accurate in the pictures. I also crocheted a couple more of the facial putts, but I still need to sew them together so they form a “puff”. 

Free Pattern Friday

I’ve been on a placemat kick lately. I make a lot of placemats from oddball orphan blocks or random scraps and donate them to Meals on Wheels. I try to donate about 25 per year. Sometimes I hit that goal and sometimes not. Either way, they are happy to receive them, and they are fast and easy to make.

Sometimes I get tired of random scraps and start looking for patterns I can use to make matched sets. I found another free pattern that I tried out yesterday.

The pattern is called “But First Coffee”, and you can find it here. I don’t have any of the coffee fabric, but I had a yard of bee fabric I thought was really cute. 

I’m pretty sure the bee fabric was from Walmart; the brown and the honeycomb print are from Hobby Lobby. I changed the dimensions of the placemats so the honeycomb border would show up better. I’m not so sure that was the right decision. If I bind it with the dark brown, I think it will look better. 

It didn’t take very long to get a set of four made. 

Depending how much fabric I have left, I want to get another set or two made. I think I will try to follow the pattern as it is written and see what I think. Oooh, I just had an idea. What if I put the bees on the left and the honeycomb on the right and use a beige or gold for the border? Something to consider! I plan to donate these for our church craft sale. Any that are left over can be donated to Meals on Wheels, but right now I have plenty for them. 

After my exercise class this morning I am going to drive to Stafford for the Coastal Prairie quilt show. I used to go to it when I lived in Lake Jackson, and it was always a good show. I texted Betty to see if she wanted to ride along, and she said yes. It’s always more fun to go with a friend! I will take some pictures while I’m there. Have a great Friday!

Happy Fourth and Another Free Pattern

 Happy 250th Birthday America! My fervent prayer is that all Americans can put aside their differences and their conflicting political opinions and just celebrate how lucky we are to live in a country where freedom and democracy has been celebrated for 250 years. I pray we have many more years of the same! 

I have no major plans for today; there is a parade going on downtown, but the heat is outrageous, and I really don't enjoy parades that much, so I am planning to stay home and sew. 

There is a super cute pattern I found for a patriotic runner plus matching placemats. I have pulled all my fabrics from my stash and hope to work on it today.

This cat makes himself at home everywhere.

When I drive up to my shop, he is waiting for me and runs in the door as soon as I open it. I am going to have to clean off the top of the desk because he gets up here and kicks everything off! That's okay; it is due to be cleaned anyway. 7

Free Pattern Friday

I was browsing different websites looking for layer cake patterns. I have some I have had a while that need to be used. I tend to like the Robert Kauffman patterns. They are easy, but they are also eye-catching. This one caught my interest:

It would be perfect for squares you don’t want to chop up too much. I was thinking about my Kaffe Fasset squares. The only thing I’m not liking is that the quilt finishes 40” x 50”. To me, that’s a little small. Anyway, the pattern is here. I like the graphic appeal of the pattern, but it needs to be bigger. 

I went to the funeral home yesterday to pay my respects, and I got choked up when I saw two of the quilts I quilted and bound hanging behind the casket. It was very emotional for me. 

Good news—my desert rose is finally blooming. 

The heat is miserable right now with no letting up for a while. I try to stick with plants that can withstand our South Texas weather, and the desert rose and the lantana thrive in it. The yellow lantana is flowering right now; the orange native lantana isn’t. I’m not sure why. I’m just glad something can tolerate this heat!

Free Pattern Friday

I was at quilt guild yesterday, and will be there today. We had show and tell yesterday after our business meeting, and someone showed this quilt. 

I asked her the name of it, and she said “Bee Creative”. It was so pretty! When I got home I googled the pattern, and found a place where I can get it free!

We spent the afternoon teaching youth quilters how to make a rag quilt. We didn’t have a lot of kids this time….i think we had 15 last year and less than 10 this year.

The rag quilts are great for the kids because it is simple sewing and, and they don’t need to be quilted. The class will continue today. Hopefully they can finish and start enjoying their quilts!

Free Pattern Friday

I don’t know if anyone remembers, but I posted a picture of this quilt about a month ago.

The lady that made it said it was a free pattern she’d found “somewhere” and she would look for it when she got home and let me know where to find it. It’s called HoneyBell, and here is a link to the pattern. 

The pattern sample is done in four fabrics plus a white sashing, and the big blocks are cut 9-1/2” square. 

Of course I’m always trying to find different patterns to use my large collection of precuts, so I dug through the boxes and came up with this layer cake. 

The quilt finishes at 61” x 61”, and I wanted mine to be longer. Adding an extra row will make it about 76” long so I decided to do that. That means i need 20 blocks instead of 16. I had to cut a few of the smaller squares from my stash, but I found some blenders that would work.

I think I cut about twelve extra 4-1/2” squares. I’m using black for the sashing. Here are the ones I’ve gotten done so far. 

No sashing between the blocks yet, but you get the idea. I think I’m going to like it! Let me know what you think if you decide to try it. 

Free Pattern Friday

I found another free pattern that I think would be nice for a layer cake. This one is called Boardwalk, and it looks fast and easy!

The finished size is 64” x 78”, which is a great size, especially for a donation quilt. 

The rectangles are cut 4-1/2” x 9-1/2”, but I was thinking a layer cake would work and just cut them in half. The rectangles would be 5” x 10”, and the background would have to be cut 5” x 5”. 

I have a couple of Kaffe Fassett layer cakes that I haven’t wanted to cut into small pieces that would work great for this. I’ll make a post if I get a chance to try it! 

Free Pattern Friday

I was looking for a pattern to use some (a bunch) of charm squares. I had a vague idea what I was but didn’t know if I could find a pattern. While I was looking, I found this one:

It’s called Four Patch Charm Quilt.

It’s not what I was looking for, but I like it and would consider making it at some point. It requires 3 charm packs and 2-3/4 yard of background to make a 63” x 69” quilt. It’s so pretty with the batiks and navy background, but it would also work for scrap squares. I think I’m about out of navy background, but I will look for some today at the quilt show.

Sorrento

 Sorrento is a free pattern from Robert Kaufman. 

This one popped up in my Pinterest feed, and I liked it enough to download it and read through the directions. It is fat-quarter friendly. Find the pattern here.

Free Pattern

I haven’t posted a free pattern in a long time…..I have mostly been using patterns I have, or doing BOM’s. Anyway, I saw this one recently, and I really like it. 

It’s called Agatha’s Garden. The pattern is on the Andover website. You can go directly to it here. It really looks more complicated than it is. It would be quite easy to cut and sew, and it’s fairly big at 74” x 74”. I think it would be a great way to use a fat quarter collection that has an equal number of darks and lights. I am going to play with a few of the blocks and may end up adding this one to my inspiration list.

Free Jelly Roll Patterns

Happy Friday! I will be working at the quilt show today and tomorrow. I was there yesterday afternoon for the set up, but they were mostly done by the time I got there so I didn’t have to stay too long. 

Last week I posted one of the free patterns for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day, and I thought I would post the other three in case anyone hadn’t seen them. I found a link to all four patterns here. I don’t know how long they will have the patterns linked to their page, so I will go ahead and download them to my files. Here’s some pictures:

Did anyone participate in the Sew a Jelly Roll Day last Saturday? I wasn’t able to—I think I was putting binding on customer quilts that day. It would be nice to have a friend that I could sew with when there are special events like this one, but, unfortunately, we are all so busy, and running all the time, it never happens.

Saturday, September 16th is National Sew A Jelly Roll Day. There are four free jelly roll patterns in the Moda website. This one is my favorite.

I haven’t made any of the free patterns lately; I think I’ve been too busy with UFO’s. 

Today is a shop hop. It’s only three shops, and Janice and I are going. Maybe we’ll win something. 😉 That reminds me….Sarah drew a winner for this:

I didn’t win, but Janice did and she doesn’t want the Tutto tote. She is going to give it to me in exchange for some longarming. That will work out for both of us. 

More news: Reba’s shoulder injury is completely recovered.

She missed three days of ball playing and was having some serious withdrawal. You can see she started sleeping with the ball in her mouth. I finally decided the obsession was not healthy and put the ball away for a couple of days. I gave it back yesterday and we played for about thirty minutes. She never gets tired, but I do.

Free Pattern

Oh, I’ve been on a bargello kick lately…..more about that later. I found this pattern which is a type of bargello.

It’s similar to a Villa Rosa pattern called Wistful, but this one is a free pattern from Timeless Treasures. I’m going to try and link it here. I hope it works. I’m having a little trouble with the hyperlink. Anyway, if the link doesn’t work, just Google Timeless Treasures Frequency quilt, and it should come up.

Spring Promise Quilt Pattern

I saw a free quilt pattern that can be made from a jelly roll plus some background fabric. It’s called Spring Promise.

I like the soft colors they used—it would make a sweet baby quilt, and would be super quick and easy to make. The pattern is here.

I should have put it in yesterday’s post when I wrote about the charity quilt that refused to lay flat. Ninety percent of the quilts I longarm for people are great. It’s the other ten percent that make me shake my head.

Free Pattern - Sweet Balance

I thought at first this was 2-1/2” strip friendly, but the strips are cut 3-1/2”. The benefit of that is the size of the finished quilt—it’s 87” x 99”. It uses 13 different fabrics, and one of them is 2 yards, but all the rest is 1-1/8 yard or less, so potentially a stash buster. Of course, the coordinated collection they used does make a pretty quilt. Here’s the pattern. 

I was in Corpus pretty much all day yesterday. Making the drive both ways in one day was tiring for me. I made a couple of stops while I was there. One stop was an antique mall, and the other stop was JoAnn fabrics. There was nothing I needed at the antique mall, but I am such a sucker for these little baby dresses:

I try to limit myself to one, and this is the one I chose. I wanted to look at patterns at JoAnn; unfortunately they were only 30% off, so I only got two. Thread was also on sale, and I got some spools of the colors I never seem to have.

I have an idea for a top like the one on the right made from vintage fabric, but the idea is still percolating. 

Pick Up Sticks

Sometimes you just can’t quilt, but you can always look at patterns and dream about what you want to make. I tend to dream of stash busting, and of course there is a good reason for that. I found this one from Windham Fabrics.

This one is made from a single fabric line, but it might work well for scraps also. The pattern is here.

This is so cute

Well, I am always attracted to the gray backgrounds. The pattern is called Barbados. You can find it here. It uses 16 fat eighths plus yardage, but it could be easily modified for fat quarters (which, of course, I have lots of). The dimensions are 50” by 74”. 

I do love a scrappy quilt, especially when I can use my stash. I have several baskets of fat quarters that are just gathering dust at this point. I think I just need some inspiration….and maybe some free time.

 

Abstract Pinwheel Baby Quilt

I actually found this quilt while I was searching for something else, but it definitely caught my attention. With all the scrap cutting I have been doing lately, I am all about the 2-1/2" squares.

There is also lot of white background, but that could be changed to a soft gray or something. What colors are the new moms into now? I made several baby quilts a few years ago, and gray and navy was popular as well as navy and aqua. I really think I would just do what I wanted and hope it would be liked and used. Anyway, the pattern is here. The quilt is around 40” square, but I think I would be tempted to use a wider border, but that’s just me—I like a little wider border.

Flight Plan Quilt Pattern

This is done in Tonga batiks.

I like all four color ways, but the top left and bottom left are especially pretty. The free pattern is here. The pattern has a couple of more color ways that aren’t shown in the thumbnails. 

The fabric requirements include a Tonga treats six pack….I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one. It’s six inch strips. I’m sure fat quarters would work also, but it would take 20 of them.
