Not What I Expected

I'm not really sure what I expected, but I got the border fabric for my Hanging Gardens quilt and though I would go ahead and get it cut and sewn on. So many of the Asian-style prints are directional and this is no exception.

I don't know if the picture shows it very well, but this is sort of pinky red. The picture on the website looked like a bright red, which I thought had more of an Asian vibe. Not sure I love this. Well, I do like pink, so why not give it a try?

I had measured the quilt top at 80" x 84" so I ordered extra fabric as I expected to need more to keep the pattern all going in the correct direction, and because I have been shorted when ordering online.  It turns out the top is 90" x 90". I really don't know how I could have missed it by that much.

I got the cutting done and started adding the borders. Still not sure I love this fabric so I laid it out for a better look after I got the side borders put on.

Yes, I did put the side borders on the top and bottom. I knew the border fabric was directional, but I forgot about the top also being directional.

This is turning into a comedy of errors, but I'm not amused about it. I'm mostly just aggravated. I managed to get the two borders taken off--which took longer than sewing them on. I hope to get them on today, but I've sort of lost heart on this one.

In the meantime, here is a video of Kat (number 2) being her awesome self.

Bargello Quilts

These quilts were part of a display of Bargello quilts at the Victoria Quilt Show. Apparently there was a workshop for the guild that happened before I joined. This is not all of them; there were quite a few that were on display.

I think they are gorgeous. That’s another pattern that is on my bucket list. I actually have a pattern, and I have all the fabrics bought. It’s all in a box marked “bargello”. I know that’s not enough to get it done, but I don’t have the time right now. I hope I can start on it sooner rather than later.

Flanged Binding

I thought about waiting to post this until I could get the binding completely finished, but I don't know when that will be. Here are pictures of the binding and the entire (unbound) quilt.

I had to go find a Youtube tutorial to refresh my memory on what sizes to cut the two fabrics. The main color is 1.5" and the flange color is 1.75". It seems kind of counter-intuitive to me, but it works.

I stitched in the ditch between the green and the check, and needless to say, it is harder than it looks to keep the stitching in the ditch!

Two of my corners were a little funky, and I remember that being my issue last time I tried this technique. I am going to try and get the entire binding stitched down and then decide if I want to redo the corners or not.

I do love the green with the navy gingham check!

To-Do List Tuesday 9-27-22

This past week passed so fast. I knew I would be busy and deliberately kept my list short. Here’s what I had last week:

1) Bind three customer quilts. Check.

2) Finish adding hanging sleeves to quilt show entries. Check. I posted about it here.

3) Figure out a plan for the Hanging Gardens quilt or decide if it needs to go back on the shelf. I decided I want another border and ordered the fabric. Once I receive the fabric, putting the final border on will become another goal.

Here’s this weeks list:

1) Bind three more customer quilts.
These three should catch me up on this particular customer. Once these are done, I can go back to quilting.

2) Do a flange binding on my White Cloud quilt. I already have the fabric, just need to make it happen.

3) Put final border on Hanging Gardens (assuming I get the fabric this week; if not, I'll find something else that needs a border and work on that.

I think it's going to be a super productive week for me if I can keep the interruptions to a minimum. Just have to play it by ear. I am linking this post to TexasGuiltGal. Have a great week everyone!

Victoria Quilt Show Part 2

I have some more pictures, although I’m not sure I captured everything. I get caught up in looking at the quilts and forget to take a picture.

I think this is the one that won Best of Show.

I would still like to make one of the braid quilts; I guess you could say it’s on my bucket list. I might need to put that on my 2023 goal list.

Victoria Quilt Show Part 1

I have so many pretty pictures to share.....I titled this post Part 1 as I haven't finished uploading all of them. There weren't as many entries as some of the previous years, but there were still enough to make it an enjoyable show.

This one and the kaleidoscope one were made by different people, but they were both copies of ones their grandmother's had made using fabrics from their mother's and grandmother's scraps. I though that was very cool.

The next two were made by an eight-year-old boy who is the grandson of a guild member.

He made the squares on this one from a bag of scraps he bought at the guild show last year. I though that was very cool too.

More to come tomorrow!

Saturday

I got some fabric ordered so I can add borders to Hanging Gardens. I found quite a few Asian prints on fabric.com. This is the one I ordered.

It wasn't my first choice, but there were only two yards of my first choice, and all these prints seem to be directional, so I figured I had better get a little extra. I don't know why I care about the prints all going the same way, but I do.

I worked yesterday morning at the quilt show (also today). They had a display of our community service donation quilts, and I did get a couple of pictures.

I'm happy to finally get a close up of the John Deere one, as I failed to do so after I quilted it. I'm happy to say I quilted over half of the ones in the display.

I also did a little stash enhancement.

These were $6/yd. and are colors I am low on. I'm also low on brown, but I didn't find any at the same price point.

I will get pictures today of some of the beautiful quilts that were entered into the show.

Goal Progress

I actually got the hanging sleeves added to all three quilts and got them dropped off at the church this afternoon. I was in such a hurry, I didn't get any pictures, but I'm sure no one is interested in a picture of a hanging sleeve anyway. I got chastised for not having the correct size of sleeve! I had asked at the meeting and was told I needed to cut the fabric 4.5" so I cut it 5" to have a little extra. I was told today that it should be cut 9" so it would be 4.5" on each side. Well gee. I have the sheet I was given at the last guild meeting "Quilt Entry Information", and nowhere on that sheet does it say anything about the size of the sleeve. Which is why I asked someone. Maybe I need to be more careful who I ask.

I'm still struggling with the Hanging Gardens quilt.

I think I am stalling out because of the borders. I had debated about adding another border last year and decided not to, but nothing has moved forward since then, and I think I really want another border. Also, the current size is 80" x 84" which is kind of awkward. I think another 10 or 12 inches would make it a more useable size. I pulled out some stuff I have on hand to see if anything works, but I'm not sold on any of these.
The fabrics in the top are all Asian-inspired, and I will probably see what I can find online to order. I already checked the LQS, and they don't have much Asian. I would like to find something and get it on the way so I can make myself finish this quilt.
